Sustainable Wood DIY Contest: Where Creativity Meets
Sustainability One DIY Creation at a Time

Every piece of wood carries a story. With creativity and craftsmanship, even unused wood, offcuts, old furniture and discarded pieces can be transformed into something beautiful, functional and meaningful. This is the idea behind the Sustainable Wood DIY Contest, organised by the Malaysian Timber Council (MTC), which serves as a platform that brings together craftsmanship, design and environmental responsibility in a way that is both inspiring and accessible.

Now returning for its second edition, the contest invites people to see wood in a new light, not only as a renewable resource but also as a material that can be reused, repaired, repurposed and given a second life. Whether you are a student exploring bold ideas, a hobbyist pursuing a passion, a family working on home projects or a skilled maker showcasing your expertise, the challenge is the same: to transform reclaimed or recycled wood into items with function, beauty and everyday relevance.

More than just a competition, the Sustainable Wood DIY Contest encourages participants to rethink how wood is used and valued. From decorative and craft items such as wall art, planters, clocks, trays and shelving to reclaimed wood furniture such as tables, chairs, benches, cabinets and racks, each project demonstrates how creativity, functionality and sustainability can come together effectively. It also reminds us that good design is not only about appearance, but also about making responsible use of resources and extending their lifespan.

Wood has many green qualities that make it suitable for more conscious living. When responsibly sourced, it is renewable, durable, repairable and reusable. Its ability to be reclaimed or repurposed also supports circular design, where materials are kept in use for as long as possible instead of being discarded. Through this contest, MTC hopes to encourage greater appreciation of wood as a valuable and versatile resource while inspiring more sustainable everyday practices.

The Sustainable Wood DIY Contest is a simple but meaningful way to show that wood waste and unused wood still have value. Through creativity and practical design, these materials can be given a second life while encouraging more people to make greener choices in their daily lives,” said MTC’s CEO, Madam Noraihan Abdul Rahman.

The contest is open in two categories, General Public and Students, with entries focused on sustainable wood projects using wood waste or recycled wood. To participate, register via the QR code and submit photos or videos of your completed project on MTC’s Facebook page, together with a short explanation of your inspiration, for a chance to win cash prizes.

More than a competition, the contest is an invitation for everyone to be part of a more sustainable future, one creative project at a time. As environmental awareness continues to grow, even a simple idea made from reused or reclaimed materials, can reduce waste, encourage circular thinking and inspire more sustainable lifestyles.

The Sustainable Wood DIY Contest is open for entries until 31 July 2026. Turn unused wood into original, practical and inspiring creations. Register today by scanning the QR code or visit MTC’s Facebook page to learn more.
